The "spell casting" professions are Elementalist, Mesmer, Ritualist, Monk, and Necromancer. |

I think Ele is the closest thing to a mage.

Welcome to the Game! Elementalist is the easy way to go, Monk is the hard way to go if you are very new to Guild Wars... although you should check the wiki or the official wiki for more specification about all the professions enjoy and good luck |

If you want to play a mage, you sure need to take an elementalist.
It's easiest to begin with warrior! |

Welcome to the game!
For the moment, we only have one playable race - human. For players with Nightfall and Eye of the North, there are hero characters that are from races other than human, although they do not have any special racial abilities that set them apart from humans. The issue of race and racial bonuses will come up in GW2, if I've been reading the reports right. As far as being a mage goes, there are 5 professions that are pure spellcasters: the elementalist, monk, necromancer, mesmer and ritualist (the last one required Factions, while the others are core and can be created no matter what campaign you own). Each of these professions has a number of staves available that are linked to their spellcasting attributes, although it should be noted that the staff in Guild Wars is a ranged weapon, not a melee weapon. Each of these spellcasting professions has a different speciality: the elementalist works primarily with damage spells (like a black mage), the monk works primariliy with healing and protection spells (like a white mage), the necromancer works primarily with curse spells and undead minions, the mesmer works primarily with illusionary and manipulative spells, and the ritualist works primarily with summoning spells. All of them are fun to play with, though some casting professions are harder to master than others. |
